Daley/Massafra tight in state House

From Janice Crompton:

Another State House race in the southern suburbs that has tightened up substantially tonight is in the 49th District, where longtime incumbent Rep. Peter J. Daley, D-California, is for the second time in as many years fighting off a challenge from GOP candidate Rich Massafra of Monongahela.

Vote totals available from the Department of State show Mr. Daley with a very slim 623-vote lead, but his peeps at the precincts in Washington and Fayette counties have told him his lead has grown to 1,200 votes, with Donora precincts yet to be counted.

"I have never lost Donora," said a confident Mr. Daley, who said he suspected the race would be close when the Pennsylvania Republican Campaign Committee and other groups dumped "at least $400,000" into the race, through television and radio ad purchases, along with an unprecedented 25 mailers.

"These were outside groups from Washington, D.C.," said Mr. Daley, who estimated that he spent about $100,000 in the race.
