Gainey endorses, exits

This one's no surprise: state Rep. Ed Gainey will officially endorse Councilman Bill Peduto in the mayoral race today.

The two East End Democrats have been campaigning together for months so this is just a recognition of a long-established alliance. Before he puts his mayoral support on the record, Mr. Gainey will resign from his post as chairman of the Pittsburgh Democratic Committee. That exit is prompted by the fact that the committee, in an uncontested ballot, gave its endorsement to Mr. Peduto's rival, city Controller Michael Lamb, so that it would be untenable for Mr. Gainey to lead the committee members while flouting their vote.
