WTAE: Politics on city time?

WTAE-TV's Bob Mayo ran a story last night on a government email city Public Works Director Rob Kaczorowski sent recently that seems to criticize mayoral candidate Bill Peduto. Kaz and Peduto have clashed in the past and the DPW chief is a known Jack Wagner supporter -- so known that he participated in a midday Wagner press conference April 11. The station also has video of him with Wagner last month at a city senior center.

The email to Public Works employees and others (in full here) praises the work of the department during the Pittsburgh Marathon and ends: "Makes you wonder about all the political rhetoric some candidates are making about cleaning house and getting rid of everybody! Change for the better or will it be change for the worse??????"

From the report:

When asked by Channel 4 Action News reporter Bob Mayo about the email, Kaczorowski initially responded, "I don't know what you're talking about." When shown a copy of the email, Kaczorowski said, "No, that's not political. That was a statement that was made by every candidate, I believe, says they're going to make changes".

When asked about his relationship with candidate Jack Wagner's mayoral campaign, Kaczorowski said, "No, I'm not working with any campaign," and denied appearing with Wagner at public events.

The Wagner campaign said the email was "unacceptable."
