Casey: against Dem fracking ban

Published by Tim McNulty on .

Mark down U.S. Sen. Bob Casey as the latest Democratic leader to criticize a party platform calling for a moratorium on Marcellus Shale drilling.

At an event this morning on efforts to save funding for a federal energy research facility in South Park, Casey, a natural gas supporter, said he disagreed with a June vote by the state's Democratic committee backing a statewide fracking ban.

The party, Casey said, has a history of having "differing points of view on some very basic issues. I just think we have to take continue to take advantage of the opportunity we have. There's no reason we have -- I believe and I think the evidence and the research and the science will prove this -- there's no reason why we have to make the old false choices between jobs and the extraction of natural gas, between economic growth and protecting our environment. I think we can do all three."
