Maddow talks guns with Burgess
Friday night, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow broadcast her tour of Homewood's deadly Formosa Way with Councilman Ricky Burgess, during her trip to Pittsburgh for the NRA convention. (He also does a car tour of the struggling neighborhood.)
"Tell the NRA thank you very much for this gift," Burgess says, decrying the gun-and-drug related violence along the boarded-up alley. "This is what guns have done to my community."
But one inconvenient truth the spot doesn't mention: Burgess was the only council opponent of a 2008 bill requiring lost or stolen guns to be reported to police, siding with the Ravenstahl administration in rare break with its own police chief, Nate Harper. Burgess argued the bill would be found illegal and thus unenforceable -- but it was upheld two years later by Commonwealth Court, after a NRA challenge.
