Santorum fundraises off abortion comments

Published by Tim McNulty on .

We noted last week that Rick Santorum is embracing -- not running away from -- really conservative stances as he targets voters in Iowa and South Carolina. So it shouldn't be surprising that he's trying to raise money off his latest eyebrow-raising comments on blacks and abortion.

Here's the fundraising pitch, via Colby Itkowitz at the Morning Call:

"For decades certain human beings were wrongly treated as property and denied liberty in America because they were not considered persons under the constitution. Today other human beings, the unborn of all races, are also wrongly treated as property and denied the right to life for the same reason; because they are not considered persons under the constitution.

To pro-life advocates – like you and me – this is not an unusual sentiment. But to the media and those on the left, this was a charge of racism."

The email ends with a P.S.: "Please help support America's Foundation so that we can continue fighting for the unborn. Click here to donate."

Santorum is actually talking renewable fuels, of all things, in Des Moines at the Iowa Renewable Fuels Summit. He's there through tomorrow -- it's his ninth visit -- doing "several media interviews and private meetings with grassroots activists," according to a news release. Politico is also reporting three more trips to New Hampshire for Lincoln Day Dinner Speeches on Feb. 12, March 11 and March 28. That would bring his N.H. total to (this one goes to) 11.
