Wednesday heds
From our story today on Stephen McEwen being tapped chair of the state's redistricting committee:
The court's role in selecting the chairman was triggered by the inability of the four caucus leaders to agree on one of the 15 applicants who had submitted their names for the post.
Erik Arneson, spokesman for the GOP senators, noted that the court went outside the applicant pool to choose Mr. McEwen.
In a statement announcing the selection, Chief Justice Ronald Castille noted that 10 years ago, after a similar lack of consensus among caucus leaders, the high court had picked another Superior Court veteran, Judge Frank Montemuro, to chair the last reapportionment commission.
