We interrupt our gun-happy NRA correspondent to bring your daily dose of Rick Santorum news. Senator Rick is appearing at the NRA convention today and our home base team will have more on that later, but he was down in D.C. on Thursday talking foreign policy. I had the full rundown in today's paper of the sober foreign policy speech and Q-and-A, in which Santorum advanced a George Bush-like view of the world and warned about radical Muslims trying to establish Sharia law in the U.S. through bank transactions.

After the formal exercises, though, was when the Washington political press went to work quizzing Santorum on the much less substantive issues of the day. Santorum revealed that he is not undertaking a formal effort to remedy his "Google problem" if he gets in the presidential race, and he figured that will work out with the flurry of news coverage and such as he moves on. He also went on an extended riff on the evils of Planned Parenthood that have to do with its roots in the eugenics movement. Huffington Post has the full recap of that, with PP response.

trumpcopterHe also addressed everyone's favorite topic: Donald Trump. A reporter asked Santorum if it was tough to get attention and good poll results when The Donald is running around, and the former Penn Hills resident replied with an image that seemed to liken the Trump copter to something out of Close Encounters of the Third Kind:

You get all the press and all the glitz and glamour and that kind of stuff, but eventually you’ve got to go to Marshalltown, as I was yesterday, and Cedar Rapids and Dubuque and Denison and Sioux Center and meet folks who are going to turn out at these caucuses because they are passionate about the people that they know and they trust. And we’ll wait and see who’s willing to make those commitments and do that. And maybe this is a different cycle. Maybe that’s not the way it’s going to happen. Maybe some megastar could come in and land the mothership, I don’t know.

This means something. This is important.

Santorum was noncommittal about filing with the FEC on Tuesday in time for the new Fox News deadline to participate in Thursday's debate in South Carolina. The Daily Santorum will be filing from S.C. next week so it would be nice if Rick would show, too. Otherwise, Libertarians arise for the Daily Ron Paul.
