As Rep. Charlie Rangel, D-N.Y., prepares for a possible ethics trial Thursday, Republicans are attempting to shame Dems into giving away money Rangel and his political action committee donated to their campaigns -- and not just from this cycle. Many have done so, and just this week Rep. Kathy Dahlkemper, D-Erie, announced that she'd donate $14,000 that Rangel gave her during her 2008 campaign to charity.
Rep. Jason Altmire, D-McCandless, received $21,000 from Rangel, according to FEC filings, during the 2006 and 2008 campaigns, but he's not going to be giving that money away.
"Because of the ongoing ethics investigation into Congressman Rangel, Congressman Altmire has not taken any contributions from him this election cycle," Altmire campaign manager Rachael Heisler wrote in an email. "As such, he doesn't have any contributions to return or give away."
As you might have guessed, that doesn't satisfy the GOP.
"Many of his colleagues, including Dahlkemper, are returning any cash from any cycle that they’ve taken from Rangel," NRCC spokesman Tory Mazzola wrote in an email. "If they want to distance themselves from the ethical troubles in Washington and demonstrate that they will do as they’ve said and stand up to Washington’s culture of corruption..."
