Dog Days

Published by Tim McNulty on .

Have we mentioned that it's the dog days of summer? Not much going on politically these days -- at least compared to the usual frenetic pace of things here in Pa -- so thanks for checking in here at Early Returns, even when the pickings are thin.

Odds and ends:

Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign has repaid its $15K debt to the Bethlehem School District. (Morning Call)

Jason Altmire's GOP opponent Keith Rothfus blasted the incumbent's support of the $26 billion state bailout bill, which Democrats say was necessary to pay for Medicaid and schoolteachers, including almost 6,000 in Pennsylvania. Rothfus presents the GOP side:

“Congressional Democrats couldn’t be away from Washingtonfor more than a few days before they had to come back and spend more money they don’t have.  Instead of going home and talking with constituents, Jason Altmire has again followed Nancy Pelosi’sorders and voted in favor of another spending bill that will do nothing to create jobs or help the economy.  Even the liberal Washington Post has stated that this legislation is “more of an election-year favor to teachers unions than an optimal use of public resources”.  This bill is just more of the same failed“stimulus” policies that have led to fewer jobs, more debt, and no real recovery.”

Altmire, on the other hand, stressed his vote yesterday on border-control/illegal immigration:

WASHINGTON, D.C.) -- As part of his on-going efforts to combat illegal immigration, today U.S. Congressman Jason Altmire (PA-04) helped to pass legislation that will deploy 1,000 additional Border Patrol agents along America’s Southwest Border. The Emergency Supplemental Appropriations for Border Security Act (H.R. 6080) passed the House today and must still pass the Senate before it can be signed into law. This legislation is fully paid for and will not add one penny to the federal deficit.
“If we truly want to stop illegal immigrants from coming into our country, then we have to do a better job of securing America’s borders,” Congressman Altmire said. “This bill will improve our man power along the border and provide Border Patrol agents with the equipment that they need to find and stop would-be illegal immigrants.”
