DEP: Corbett agrees with us
Remember the Corbett camp's call yesterday -- which was seconded by Pat Toomey -- for the DEP to work with energy suppliers to improve drilling standards? That's an old idea, the DEP tells Donald Gilliland at the Patriot-News:
The problem? It’s already been done.
“I am glad Attorney General Corbett has joined that call, but we issued that call in May,” DEP Secretary John Hanger said.
More than 90 experts from 40 gas companies met with DEP staff more than a month ago to agree on best practices for drilling, he said. Hanger also made a well-publicized call for the industry to voluntarily adopt those standards before they become regulation in October.
DEP’s response didn’t sit well with the Corbett campaign: “That may be DEP’s opinion, but it’s not the perception of many in the industry and many in the general public,” spokesman Kevin Harley said. “Corbett’s asking for DEP and Gov. [Ed] Rendell to show leadership.”
