Scranton a popular stop

Published by Tim McNulty on .

Josh Mrozinski of the Scranton Times-Tribune previews the city's visit by Bill Clinton and Joe Sestak this afternoon:

Mr. Obama has not visited Northeast Pennsylvania as president, but Vice President Joe Biden appeared April 23 at a rally for U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, who was running against Mr. Sestak in the primary.

Mr. Clinton last campaigned in the region on Nov. 3, 2008, stumping for Rep. Paul E. Kanjorski, D-11, Nanticoke, at Wilkes University. He was last in Scranton on Oct. 12, 2008, campaigning for Mr. Obama for president with his wife, Hillary, and Mr. Biden.

Before Mr. Clinton's 2008 visit, the region had been host to other presidents and vice presidents rallying for candidates, including George W. Bush, who stumped for U.S. Rep. Don Sherwood, R-10, Tunkhannock, in October 2006. Six years earlier, Vice President Al Gore stumped for state Rep. Jim Wansacz, D-114, Old Forge. In 1982, Vice President George H.W. Bush stumped for U.S. Rep. James Nelligan for the 11th District.
