AFL-CIO backs Dems

Published by James O'Toole on .

The state AFL-CIO has endorsed Dan Onorato for governor and Rep. Joe Sestak for the U.S. Senate.  Neither Democrat had the labor group's backing in the primary.

The organization supported Sen. Arlen Specter for the Democratic nomination. The group didn't make an endorsement in the governor's race as no one was able to gain the support of two-thirds of the group's executive board.  Mr. Onorato and Auditor General Jaqck Wagner both received the support of a variety of individual unions.

"Dan Onorato has an excellent record of job creation and saving jobs while serving as Allegheny County's Chief Executive,'' AFL-CIO President Rick Bloomingdale said in a statement announcing the endorsements..

Mr. Bloomingdale said of the Senate candidate, "Joe Sestak has compiled a 97 percent voting record in support of Pennsylvania workers on issues that matter most: economic recovery, protecting and creating jobs and helping unemployed workers."

The labor organization also rallied behind an all-Democratic slate of endorsed candiates in the state's congessional elections.
