Altmire decries mosque
To the list of Republicans criticizing a mosque near Ground Zero, add Jason Altmire (a Democrat).
Remarks at a Ramadan dinner Friday night by President Obama on the freedom of religion sparked massive criticism by Republicans over the weekend, and in an interview with KDKA radio Altmire joined the chorus against the mosque plans.
Pa2010 has the story and links to the KD audio:
Acknowledging the project’s backers have a legal and constitutional freedom to do so, Altmire said “there should be some discussion about what is right morally, as well as just what you’re allowed to do.”
. . . “I think that the people who are supportive of putting the mosque there are missing the point of the impact and the devastation that [Sept. 11] had to us as a country but certainly to that part of the country that was directly impacted by that,” Altmire said.
The issue sounds a lot like the debates over hosting criminal terror trials on United States soil, something Altmire has also joined Republicans in criticizing.
