Another one bites the dust: Point Breeze activist Mel Packer is dropping out of the Senate race. The Green Party candidate basically said as much last week when he predicted Joe Sestak would win the ballot challenge against him.

Harrisburg public radio reporter Scott Detrow talked to Packer about the choice:

"We don’t have the resources,” Packer explained during a Friday interview. "That’s what makes it so difficult in this state. You know, you’re fighting big money all the time. Sestak is big money. The Democratic Party is big money, the Republican Party is big money. So how can we possibly go on with the challenge? I don’t have the money to do that. The Green Party doesn’t have the money to do that."

Packer had told Sestak’s lawyers he wouldn’t show up in court this week, but he says they told him the hearing would take place either way, unless he dropped out. "In the past, people have been sued for legal fees," he explained to me a few minutes ago. "They didn’t threaten that, but I need to be realistic. What if they decided to do it?" He says he’ll sign the withdrawal papers later today, and then FedEx them to the Department of State.
