Repeal is impossible in short term

Published by Tim McNulty on .

You may remember the Club For Growth HCR repeal pledge drive we wrote about yesterday. The problem is -- as Matt Yglesias notes -- it's impossible for the GOP to get the two-thirds vote necessary next year to overturn an Obama veto:

If they won every single Democratic-held seat that’s up in 2010, and held on to Ohio, New Hampshire, and Missouri the Republicans would be up to 59 Senators—far, far short of the 67 you’d need. To repeal health care, you need to win the 2012 Presidential election, which I think is generically unlikely. What’s more, there’s a fair chance the Republican nominee will be Mitt Romney who doesn’t even really disagree with the main tenets of what passed [Sunday].
