Altmire gets an assist

Published by Tim McNulty on .

Jason Altmire has seen his Democratic-attuned base get shaky lately, but tomorrow he'll get some assistance from Planned Parenthood.

A House bill to federally defund the group may come up for a Senate vote this week, and so anti-abortion activists at the Susan B. Anthony List are touring the midwest/East Coast to keep up the drumbeat against the funding -- tomorrow they'll rally in support of US Rep. Mike Kelly at his office in Erie and against Altmire at his district office in Aliquippa.

Planned Parenthood will stage a counter-rally at Altmire's office starting at 3:45 p.m.

The House voted 245-180 on Feb. 18 to bar federal funds from the group -- with only 10 Democrats voting in favor of the amendment from Indiana's Mike Pence. Altmire joined the bulk of Dems in voting against.

It's interesting that SBA should target Altmire over this, since last year the group gave most of its attention to defeating Democrats (including Kelly's rival Kathy Dahlkemper) who voted in favor of health care reform. Altmire of course voted against the health bill last year, which earned him the scorn of unions and other Democratic constituencies.
