The deadline for nomination petitions heralded competitive primaries for several countywide offices, as well as for all five of the Pittsburgh council races on the ballot.

As expected, both parties will host nomination battles for the chance to succeed Dan Onorato as county executive.  Rich Fitzgerald, who resigned from county council Monday, will face county Controller Mark Patrick Flaherty on the Democratic side.  Mr. Fitzgerald barely edged out Mr. Flaherty for their party’s endorsement in a vote among committee members Sunday.

Patti Weaver, a prominent Tea Party activist from Fox Chapel, is running for the GOP nomination, along with D. Raja, a businessman and Mt. Lebanon commissioner, and Chuck McCullough.  The county charter forced Mr. McCullough, like his Democratic colleague Mr. Fitzgerald, to resign his county council seat to run for the higher office.  Mr. McCullough faces the added complication of a pending trial on charges that he improperly used the assets of an elderly client to make a variety of political and charitable contributions.

Republican Robert Howard, a former North Allegheny school board member, is unopposed for the GOP nomination for county controller.  The Democratic side of the ballot offers a three-way race.  George F. Matta, a former clerk of courts is seeking the nomination to succeed Mr. Flaherty.  He faces Valerie McDonald Roberts, a county official and a former Pittsburgh council and school board member and state Rep. Chelsa Wagner, the Beechview lawmaker who captured the party endorsement in the race.  A list of candidates for some of the more prominent races, courtesy of Mark Wolosik and his crack Ross Street crew, can be found after the jump.
