Fitzgerald only pro-choice exec candidate

Published by Tim McNulty on .

Way back in 2003, Dan Onorato wasn't too happy when we mentioned the Democratic county executive candidate was against abortion. But it was a valid point since there is a public health aspect to Allegheny County government, and besides it became an issue later when he ran for governor.

So here's where this year's executive candidates stand: at a forum by the Executive Women's Council of Greater Pittsburgh today, Democrat Rich Fitzgerald was the only one of the four to say he supports abortion. ("I don't think any government official should tell a woman what to do with her body," he said in response to a question at the council's breakfast session.)

Fellow Democrat Mark Patrick Flaherty said there are "differing opinions" on the issue, but his upbringing was pro-life. Republican Chuck McCullough similarly said he is Roman Catholic and pro-life. Republican D. Raja said he is pro-life too, but with no further comment.

We'll try to post more on the meeting -- including a spat between Fitzgerald and Flaherty on the latter's alleged support of controller candidate George Matta -- later.
