Arlen Specter was in no mood to address Supreme Court picks this weekend -- he released only a terse statement on John Paul Stevens' retirement late Friday afternoon, while the Sestak camp was doing all it could to remind Democrats of his support of Bush II's nominees.

But he couldn't duck on Saturday after Rick Santorum said Specter made a deal in 2004 to support those picks (John Roberts and Samuel Alito) in order to get Santorum's help that year in beating back Pat Toomey. Specter denied it Saturday, but Santorum stood by his remarks.

Let's not forget that Santorum -- a possible presidential contender and perhaps future RNC chair (PoliticsPa) -- has backpedaled fast on Specter since his party switch last year, and written before that Sestak will do his best to tie his Dem opponent to himself and Bush. "I suspect you will be seeing Arlen with me and former President Bush on TV a time or two," he wrote in the Inquirer last year.

Here's Bush in a 2004 campaign ad saying Specter is "a firm ally when it matters most."
